The research reactor TRIGA Mainz – a strong and versatile neutron source for science and education

2019

Abstract The TRIGA Mark II-reactor at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of three research reactors in Germany. The TRIGA Mainz became first critical on August 3rd, 1965. It can be operated in the steady state mode with a maximum power of 100 kWth and in the pulse mode with a peak power of 250 MWth and a pulse length of 30 ms. The TRIGA Mainz is equipped with a central thimble, a rotary specimen rack, three pneumatic transfer systems, four beam tubes, and a graphite thermal column. The TRIGA Mainz is intensively used both for basic and applied research in nuclear chemistry and nuclear physics. Two sources for ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) are operational at two beam ports. At …

Optimization of Radioactive Waste Cementation for Decommissioning of Salaspils Research Reactor

2011

This paper deals with information on the radioactive waste cementation technology for decommissioning of Salaspils Research Reactor (SRR). Dismantled and segmented radioactive materials were cemented in concrete containers using tritiated water-cement mixture. The viscosity of water-cement mortar, mechanical tests of solidified mortar’s samples, change of temperature of the samples during solidification time and long time leakage of 137Cs, 14C, 60Co and 3T radionuclides was studied for different water-cement compositions with additives. The pH and electro conductivity of the solutions during leakage tests were controlled. It was shown, that water/cement ratio significantly influences on wat…

TRIGA-SPEC: the prototype of MATS and LaSpec

2015

Investigation of short-lived nuclei is a challenging task that MATS and LaSpec will handle at the low energy branch of Super-FRS at FAIR. The groundwork for those experiments is laid-out already today at the TRIGA-SPEC facility as a powerful development platform located at the research reactor TRIGA Mainz. The latest status, new developments and first results of commissioning runs are presented here.

Features of the in-situ experiments on studying of tritium release from lithium ceramic Li2TiO3 using vacuum extraction method

2021

Abstract The paper presents the results of reactor experiments with lithium ceramic Li2TiO3 performed at the WWR-K research reactor (Almaty, Kazakhstan). A qualitative analysis of the experimental results is presented. The following general results are obtained from the experiments performed by the vacuum extraction method: • Almost no tritium is released in the form of tritium water vapor, and the processes associated with tritium interaction with water vapor can be excluded from the consideration; • a significant amount of tritium is released as T2 molecule; • in long-term irradiation, a significant growth of tritium release in the form of T2 molecule with the time of irradiation is obser…

Work in the field of BNCT using the Portuguese Research Reactor

1999

Abstract  The goal of this work is to pursue the research activity in BNC and the installation of a therapy facility in the position presently occupied by the thermal column. With these objectives the experimental studies in mice and cells are continuing while improvements in the facilities are created or prepared. For this effect: (1) the installation of lead shield in the vertical access of the thermal column, which resulted in an enhancement of the Φ th toD γ ratio, was performed, (2) the adaptation of a beam tube to deliver a dominantly thermal or epithermal beam in two possible beam openings is being done and (3) Monte Carlo calculations aiming at the optimization of the conditions for…

Experiments on tritium generation and yield from lithium ceramics during neutron irradiation

2021

Abstract The vacuum extraction method with a mass spectrometry registration of tritium is presented in paper. It can provide a full-range analysis of gas phase composition in the chamber with samples under neutron irradiation. Lithium ceramics Li2TiO3 in the form of pebbles with lithium enrichment on 6Li isotope of 96% was examined. The paper shows the results of reactor experiments on study the extraction of tritium-containing molecules from lithium ceramics Li2TiO3 at various temperatures and reactor power levels at the WWR-K research reactor (Almaty, Kazakhstan). The time dependences of tritium yield from the ampoule with ceramics during reactor irradiation were obtained. Near-surface co…

Study of tritium and helium generation and release from lead-lithium eutectics Li15.7Pb under neutron irradiation

2019

Abstract This paper describes the experiments on study of tritium and helium generation and release processes from lead-lithium eutectics Li15.7Pb. The irradiation was performed at the IVG.1M research reactor at 6 MW of thermal power. The irradiation temperature increased step by step from 225 to 550 °C. A qualitative assessment of the experimental results showed that as the temperature rises above 390 °C, the tritium flux from the sample consisting of T2 and HT molecules decreases. It was concluded that the observed effect is similar to the previously observed one for lead-lithium eutectics with Li17Pb83 composition.

Implementation of an aerodynamic lens for TRIGA-SPEC

2016

Abstract We report on the optimization of the gas-jet system employed to couple the TRIGA-SPEC experiment to the research reactor TRIGA Mainz. CdI2 aerosol particles suspended in N2 as carrier gas are used for an effective transport of fission products from neutron induced 235 U fission from the target chamber to a surface ion source. Operating conditions of the gas-jet were modified to enable the implementation of an aerodynamic lens, fitting into the limited space available in front of the ion source. The lens boosts the gas-jet efficiency by a factor of 4–10. The characterization of the gas-jet system as well as the design of the aerodynamic lens and efficiency studies are presented and …

Design of the Magnet System of the Neutron Decay Facility PERC

2018

The PERC (Proton and Electron Radiation Channel) facility is currently under construction at the research reactor FRM II, Garching. It will serve as an intense and clean source of electrons and protons from neutron beta decay for precision studies. It aims to contribute to the determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark-mixing element $V_{ud}$ from neutron decay data and to search for new physics via new effective couplings. PERC's central component is a 12m long superconducting magnet system. It hosts an 8m long decay region in a uniform field. An additional high-field region selects the phase space of electrons and protons which can reach the detectors and largely improves system…
